Somerset

Travel England

Somerset is a mix of historic cities, dramatic landscapes, and slower countryside moments. From elegant streets and Roman history to wild limestone gorges, this region offers a great balance of culture and nature. Below are the places I have explored so far.

Places to visit in Somerset

Top spots in this area

Somerset is quite large, but have a look at some of my recommendations

Glastonbury Tor

Best for: views and atmosphere

The climb to the top is short but memorable. Standing on the Tor feels slightly surreal, with wide views across the Somerset Levels.

Wells Cathedral

Best for: peaceful historic sites

A beautifully balanced cathedral set in a small, quiet city. The surrounding green adds to its calm, unhurried feel.

Weston-super-Mare

Best for: classic seaside trips

Traditional seaside energy with long walks, open skies, and plenty of nostalgia. It feels familiar in the best way.

Exmoor National Park

Best for: wild countryside

Rolling moorland, quiet roads, and dramatic coastlines make Exmoor feel untouched. It is ideal if you want space and solitude.

Glastonbury Town

Best for: alternative culture

Colourful shops and a spiritual edge give Glastonbury its unique identity. It feels different from anywhere else in the county.

Somerset Countryside

Best for: slow travel

Small villages, rolling fields, and quiet lanes define much of Somerset. It is a place where slowing down feels natural.

Map & getting around

Here’s roughly where everything sits. Zoom, drag, and poke around to plan your own version of the day. Somerset is a big county so maybe a few days!
