Bruges: A Christmas Holiday Adventure with Grace and the Gang

Rolling into Bruges at the start of December felt like stepping into a festive postcard, with cobbled streets, medieval buildings, and the smell of waffles and chocolate pulling us into the city straight away.

First impressions: cobbles, charm, and Christmas vibes

Bruges canals and skyline on a winter day

As we wandered through the city, Bruges instantly delivered that old-world feeling you hope for. The streets were buzzing, the architecture looked unreal in the winter light, and everything felt set up for Christmas. We took it slow and just explored, letting the city guide the day.

Waffles, hot drinks, and the Christmas market

Food was a big part of the trip (as it should be). We hunted down waffles and chocolate, then drifted through the Christmas market with lights everywhere. Toby and James were in full “try everything” mode, and it was one of those days where you don’t need a strict plan because the atmosphere does the work for you.

History in every direction: Belfry views and canal walks

Historic Bruges buildings and winter canals

Bruges isn’t just pretty, it’s packed with history. We spent time around the Belfry and the main squares, then followed the canals as the light dropped. By night, the place turns storybook: reflections on the water, warm windows, and that calm winter energy that makes you want to stay out a little longer.

Top spots in this area

If you’re doing Bruges in winter, these are the simple “can’t miss” stops that made the day.

Belfry of Bruges (Belfort)

One of the most iconic sights in the city. Even if you don’t go up, it anchors the whole old town and makes the Markt square feel properly historic.

Markt Square

The heart of Bruges. In December it’s even better, with the glow of the square and that “festival” buzz that makes you want to linger.

Canal walks + bridges

Best for: the storybook Bruges feel

Just follow the water and you’ll find quiet corners, swans, and the prettiest reflections. Perfect when you want a calmer break from the busy streets.

Christmas market stalls

Best for: snacks and warm drinks

The lights, the music, the food smells… it’s exactly what you want on a winter trip. Try a few local treats, then warm up and keep moving.
